Coldwater Lodge No. 1023 is situated in the county seat of Branch County, in the South-Central District of the Michigan Elks Association. The current membership of 400 is active in community affairs, State programs and Grand Lodge programs. The petition was approved and the lodge was instituted on April 26, 1906. In March 1908 the Coldwater Elks bought the building at the southeast corner of Division and Pearl Streets to house lodge activities. Coldwater Lodge #1023 The building which was built in 1864 as a Spiritualist Church at a cost of $28,000, was purchased by the Elks for $7,000 in 1908 and it has an interesting history. The three story brick building is of Roman Revival design and at the time it was built the front entrance was flanked by impressive twin towers. The church changed its name several time in the next few years; Independant Congregational, Hope Chapel, and finally in 1868, the Unitarian Church. It was later owned and occupied by Fred and Marietta (Cutter) Smith both prominant names in Coldwater history. Coldwater is known as the City of Flags and flies flags on all street poles at every holiday and summer weekends.
